Lymphedema Myths Debunked - Read & Understand These Facts
Lymphedema is the
most common problem that cancer survivors go through after undergoing radiation
or chemotherapy for breast cancer. Sometimes, the removal of lymph nodes under
the arms results in the damage of the lymphatic system. This, in turn, results in
a situation where high protein fluid from affected areas is not able to drain,
leading to the accumulation of these fluids, swelling and discomfort. The lymphedema full leg garments or full
arm sleeve can keep the swelling in control thereby preventing it from
spreading.
Here are a few
myths pertaining to lymphedema that have been debunked:
MYTH #1 – You don't have any treatment for lymphedema
It's a known fact
that lymphedema cannot be cured completely. But this does not mean it can't be
controlled. Wearing compression garments, lymphedema full leg garments or arm sleeve can help to reduce
swelling, improve mobility and enable patients lead a quality life. Contact
your physician or lymphedema specialist to know more about lymphedema garments.
MYTH #2 - Lymphedema doesn't develop post-surgery
Lymphedema can
develop at any point of time likely post-surgery or radiation therapy. That is
why women who have undergone mastectomy or lymph node removal surgery are
recommended to take care of their health with more precaution. Age and weight
are also the contributing factors that increase the risk of lymphedema in
cancer survivors.
MYTH #3 - I can no longer perform exercise
On the contrary,
cancer patients are always encouraged to perform some light physical activities
as long as it does not affect their health or lead to some other health
problems. Cancer patients who are physically inactive have greater chances of
developing lymphedema. Therefore, it is advised to all cancer patients to
maintain physical regime to eliminate the risk of developing lymphedema.
MYTH #4 - I will not develop lymphedema as I had minimal lymph node
removal
It's a known fact
that when more than four lymph nodes are removed, there is an increased risk of
developing lymphedema. But, at the same time, this does not mean that patients
who have had one or two nodes removed cannot subsequently develop lymphedema.
Every patient is different. It is a bit difficult to tell whether you will
develop lymphedema or not as it is a complex disease and every patient has
different healthy history.
The lymphedema arm sleeves and lymphedema full leg garments are the
best option to manage lymphedema.
If suffering from mild lymphedema, garments can be the most suitable treatment.
If you are suffering from Stage 2 and 3 lymphedema, the doctor might first conduct Complete Decongestive
Therapy and then ask you
to wear llymphedema
full leg garments or
arm sleeve to maintain the results.
Hi. I am a breast cancer researcher and expert on the health hazards of bras. Wearing bras is the leading cause of breast lymphedema. Tight bras cause lymph stasis and consequent pain., cysts, and tissue toxification. Over time, this can lead to cancer. Women should not wear anything tight, ever. Don't wait to have breast surgery to think about your breast lymphatics. Bra-free women have about the same risk of breast cancer as men, while the tighter and longer the bra is worn the higher the risk rises.
